The final day of the Test series lived up to its billing with India emerging victorious in a gripping contest to level the series and confound those who had doubted their depleted line-up. VVS Laxman battled the pressure and an injured back and, with support from Sachin Tendulkar and Suresh Raina, countered a probing spell from Suraj Randiv and reached his 16th century to seal a memorable victory against the odds - India's fourth-highest successful chase in Tests.

India needed a recovery each time Laxman stepped out to bat this series, and he delivered once again in what appeared to be his most comfortable outing in a situation that was perhaps the most challenging. Thilan Samaraweera was unshakeable amid testing spells from Ishant Sharma and Pragyan Ojha to help Sri Lanka consolidate the dominant position they had reached on the opening day. India needed some quick wickets to give themselves a chance on a more competitive pitch, but were denied by a solid performance that took Samaraweera to his 12th Test century.

Samaraweera's innings displayed an excellent grasp of the pitch that aided movement as well as turn. He played the ball late, spotted the lengths early and, against the spinners, was adept in his footwork and confident in defence, rarely failing to pick their variations or gauge the extent of turn. And he was opportunistic, dispatching those deliveries that were pitched short. He began with a slash over gully off a wayward Abhimanyu Mithun that just evaded Virender Sehwag, and pulled him again to fine leg. He struck his fifth four off Amit Mishra when gifted a long-hop, punched Ojha through the covers and reached his century with a nudge to the leg side. The second Test laboured to its predictable end but not without some encouraging signs for India on the final day. The tenth-wicket pair of Ishant Sharma and Pragyan Ojha, who had offered resistance in Galle, repeated the feat with more ease and kept the Sri Lankan bowlers at bay for 27.1 overs before the Indian bowlers, who have been dominated in this series, took three wickets, auguring well for the final Test at the P Sara Stadium.

The start to the Sri Lankan second innings, however, gave little indication that India's bowlers would do better. The seamers often dropped short and Tharanga Paranavitana promptly slashed both Abhimanyu Mithun and Ishant Sharma for boundaries through point. He also cashed in when the ball was pitched up, driving Ishant confidently down the ground. Vijay, playing his second Test, both because of Gautam Gambhir's unexpected absence, started positively, flicking Chanaka Welegedara over square leg in the first over. Vijay dominated the strike in the first three overs, and when Sehwag got a full over to face, he started with an on-drive off Nuwan Kulasekara, wide of mid-on.

Whatever little swing the new-ball bowlers got had disappeared by then, and Sehwag unleashed an array of cuts, cover-drives, on-drives and flicks. The only blip after that came when Welegedara got one to seam away from him in the ninth over. By then both openers had reached 20, and India 41. With Vijay batting sensibly, but not slowly, it hardly seemed Gambhir was missing.

Sehwag soon overtook Vijay and widened the gap between the scores. Rangana Herath, bowling before Muttiah Muralitharan, was not welcomed kindly. Sehwag lofted him for a six in the first over, chipped him over mid-off when he saw a long-on in place, and then Vijay cover-drove him for four in the next over.

Kulasekara came back for another spell but didn't have an impact. Herath, meanwhile, was hit for another six, and Sehwag reached his fifty off 54 balls. It was a sign of the times that when Murali came on to bowl, in the last over before lunch, he had a long-on in place. It was an inexplicable decision of the Indian players to go off the field today with a strong position and the momentum steadily shifting in their way. Today play started two hours after the schedule time due to heavy fog prevailing over the field. When the play started, Indians were ready like hounds to pull off the remaining line up of the English batting line up. And it took them merely 20 minutes to finish things off.

But when India was batting, some good bowling performance along with good fielding efforts made life bit tough for India. Yuvraj maneuvered the innings well to take the control back in India’s favor late in the day. And suddenly the light was offered to the Indians and surprisingly they took it and went off the field. The play resumed with England already losing half their side for 280 runs. Today morning, the Turbinate was charged up to finish things up quickly.

He took two wickets and Zaheer took one wicket to finish the English innings with 302 on the board. Harbhajan was able to turn the ball vigorously off the wicket which was a terrible sign for the English side which has to bat in the fourth innings on the fifth day pitch.

India resumed their innings just before the lunch. But there was no respite for Indian batsman as they started the innings in blazing fashion cracking two boundaries. Gambhir was the aggressor early on. Sehwag stayed at the crease with taking too many chances. After the lunch both the openers started to open up with stroke playing. But trying to sneak a quick single Sehwag lost his wicket. And suddenly the momentum shifted in England’s favor.

Some good bowling gave the English bowlers what the required to pull off a victory here. Rahul Dravid could not even open his account in this innings whereas Sachin departed in a single figure score. With 44/3, the Indian side became a bit defensive Laxman and Gambhir tried to create a partnership. But again the running between the wickets cost Laxman his wicket.

Yuvraj started off his innings started off good with some good shots. Suddenly he took offensive stance and started hitting the spinners. He hit a big six off Monty Panesar to get himself going. Suddenly all balance shifted to India’s favor as the lead extended to 283. Then the light meter reading was the problem in the progress of the match with 13 over left in the day’s play.

For once it seemed that England would take this game away from India when Pietersen and Flintoff were batting brilliantly in the crease. But some late success over the English batsman gave India the hope of resilience as India ended the day on a high note.

But in order to try for the result, the lost too many wickets at the top of the order which made their life miserable. But the English captain had other ideas in the back of his mind. England started the day in a seriously bad fashion. Centurion of the last match Andrew Strauss lost his wicket to Zaheer with making any score. Ian Bell continued his poor run with the bat as he surrendered to pacer Ishant Sharma. Then a partnership was built after the loss of 2 wickets with two runs on the board.
Alistair Cook played a magnificent knock of half century with Kevin Petersen on the other end bullied the Indian bowlers. After Cook’s departure, Paul Collingwood joined him. But unfortunately, he a got a peach of a delivery from Amit Mishra which found the gloves of Dhoni. Then the resilience came from Flintoff and Pietersen as they started to take the attack to India. The started to bat in free flow as if they were playing ODI.

But just before the day’s play, Harbhajan got one to spin back to Pietersen’s pads from round the wickets which done the trick for India. And the last wicket came from Amit Mishra’s last over and in the last ball which was the last ball of the day. Flintoff could not keep his bat out of the googly from Mishra which was garbed fantastically by Gautam Gambhir at forward short leg position.

Indians have done exceeding good to keep England restricted to 280/6 in the third day. Tomorrow they will be looking to wrap up the innings as quick as possible. Dhoni might be allured to take the new ball as soon as it is available having seen the swing of the new ball today in the morning. India has bowled 73 over today and after 7 over tomorrow, the new ball will be due. Last day Sehwag set the tone for Indian chase of 387 runs in blistering fashion. And the remaining batsmen did not failed to capitalize on the point. Resuming the score of 129/1, India lost Dravid earlier than expected. His off-form continues to haunt him here also.

With many competitors for the place in the tests, this can prove to be harmful for Dravid’s future. But after the departure of Dravid, it was all Indian stories. Gambhir came up with another half century to continue his good form with the bat.

Laxman played some awesome shots before he departed for 26. Then Sachin and Yuvraj came up with the match winning partnership of more than 160 runs and stayed unbeaten till the end. When Yuvraj came to the crease, he was very much loosing his concentration.

But Sachin kept on giving him support for his natural game and therefore he came up with yet another half century in the second innings which paved the way towards victory. He seems to have adopted some formula for getting good runs in the second innings.

Krish is very much hopeful that the youngsters have lot of potential to go a long way. Amit has been splendid in the second test against the Aussies. He got the ball to spin off the track and even he mixed his wrong ones to good effect. He took a five wicket haul in his debut innings in the third day Mohali test. And the one fact that amazed all the selectors is the control of Mishra over the ball. He hardly gave any flat ball to the batsman to score off. He always tried to ball within the stumps. Sourav has been a legend and he has proved it time after time. His exit from cricket can leave a deep hole in the Indian cricket that can never be filled up by anyone else.

Today in the morning, he was cautious. Once he was set, he opened up a bit. He made some wonderful shots through the off side. He was patient and now he can be selected for the remaining test also. The selectors showed faith in him and he has come up with a good show in the end.

After a modest start in the year 2007, the Indian Cricket League in back in action with a all new season and with more number of competitors. This time Chief Kapil Dev has increased the number of teams by addng one more team to the competition. That team is named as Dhaka Warriors. This year, the organizers have also spread the competition all over India. With four venues booked for the tournament, this time the organizers hope to get a good review of the matches in this tournament.

In the last edition of ICL, the tournament saw some unpleasant things from both BCCI and ICC. Even the players were threatened to be banned from playing domestic and International cricket. Some of the players are still under that case only. Ban was imposed on players like Mohd. Yousuf. We never know the BCCI and its plans. Neither do we wish to know their strategy too. But the people all over the world feel that this one tournament is not going to hurt them at least financially. This is all about enhancing the cricket.

Aussies started off their second innings in a good manner. Katich was silent in one end where Hayden took the responsibility to move the scorecard. But he was tamed by an in swinger from Zaheer. Though later on it was found that the ball would have missed leg. After lunch, Katich and Ponting started the battle. But this time the duo was not that successful as Ponting fell to Ishant. Ishant bowled with pace, venom and used his slower balls to good effect to Ponting. Katich and Hussey tried to give a fight back. But Harbhajan sent both to the pavilion. Before any further partnership can be built between Clarke and Watson, Ishant removed Clarke with a nice slower ball. But after that nothing seemed to have gone right for India. The wicket-keeper batsman Haddin was very much in ease to face the Indian spinners specially Harbhajan. Kumble made no difference to the situation. Some close shouts were there but was turned down by the umpire. At the end of the day, Australia finished up with 193 on the board for the loss of five wickets.
We can just hope that this Indian team is capable of taking pressure at any situation. Otherwise, India will go down 1-0 to the next test. Tomorrow, Australia will be looking for safe score that can’t be chased down by the Indians. May be then they will give their bowlers a chance to give it a shot for the victory.
After the break, India started their innings with caution. Both Sehwag and Gambhir were watchful early on in the innings. But once Johnson came to the attack, runs started to flow. Johnson took most of the pondering from the Indians. He conceded at a rate of more than 5 in his four overs before the play was called off for the day due to rain. At stumps, India were at 68/0 with Sehwag on 43 and Gambhir on 20.

Tomorrow India would be looking to see off the first few overs before start looking for a big first innings score. But with Sehwag in the crease, nothing can be predicted. On the other hand Australia would be aiming to get the openers as soon as possible and give the middle order batsmen some sort of pressure. Today, odd balls were not bouncing as much expected. This can be a problem for the batsmen tomorrow. But seeing the experience, it can be said that Indians can pull off a good total if they can survive the first few overs when the dew will be there. Overall, we are all set for a good day of test match the next day.

On lunch at day one, Ricky Ponting was batting on 41 with Katich on 28 at the other end. The score at the end of first session was 75/1.

Early in the morning Ponting won the toss and elected to bat first. From the first over itself, the controversies started to flow. Asad Rauf gave a wrong decision in favor of the Indians giving out Hayden in third ball which did not touch his bat while carrying to Dhoni. Then started the resilience of Katich and Ponting who added valuable 166 runs for the team. Katich departed after making 66 runs and more importantly giving valuable support to the captain. Just after the tea break, Ponting brought up his 36^th test hundred and breaking his drought of runs in India. But soon after he got to his hundred, he started playing more shots to push the run rate. As a result he fell to Harbhajan Singh who trapped him in front of the stumps. The hardest blow was of Micheal Clarke who was plumbed in front of the stumps in the last over in the bowling of Zaheer Khan. Hussey remained not out at the other end with 46 runs at the end of the day.
